Apology for Mundia Blog Downtime

21 Nov 2010

Last week the Mundia blog was temporarily unavailable for server maintenance. While we expected the blog to be down for a few hours, unfortunately, due to a human error during maintenance, the blog became unavailable for a number of days.

If you tried to access the Mundia blog during this time you would have received an error message. As you know, our goal is to provide a useful resource of tips and ideas to help you build and grow your family tree. I am very sorry that we were unable to fulfill our commitment to you during the time that the blog was down. I know how confusing and frustrating it can be, not being able to access the content you want so I hope you will accept my sincere apology.

The good news is that as you can see, the problem has been resolved so thanks once again for your patience!

How do you feel about friending family on Facebook?

29 Oct 2010

Like most people, I joined Facebook to keep in touch with friends and reconnect with people I’d lost touch with. Since then more and more of my family have connected with me on Facebook and I am now Facebook friends with siblings, cousins, uncles, aunts and even my father!

I reckon about 60% of my family is on Facebook now. At first I was hesitant about allowing my family access to my Facebook profile, but it has not turned out to be a problem. In fact it’s been kind of fun catching up with family in The States who I’d lost touch with.

I’d love to hear about your experience. How much of your family is on Facebook (take the poll below) and what do you feel about friending family on Facebook?

We all make mistakes

23 Sep 2010

The single most common question we receive from members is, “How do I correct errors I make in building my tree?”  Don’t worry!  We realize that sometimes your research can lead you astray, or you can simply make a typo, or another common error and we make it easy to correct your mistakes.

When you hover your cursor over a family member’s name on your family tree you will see a popup that contains links to edit or delete an individual from your tree.  (Along with links to simply view their profile, pedigree, and family tree).

 edit delete profile pop up

If you have made several errors to your tree, or simply placed someone in the incorrect location on you tree. (i.e. your mother is listed as your grandmother, etc.) it might be simplest to delete the person from the tree and start again.  To do that click on the edit/delete person link and then the ‘delete person’ link in the new window that appears.

 delete node pop up

If you simply need to edit information such as the birth date, death date, etc you can fill in the correct information and then click ‘save’.

You can repeat these steps for each change you need to make to correct errors in your tree as many times as necessary.  So, don’t worry about mistakes, get started building your family tree today.

Project Idea: Family Heirlooms

9 Sep 2010

Recently my husband’s grandmother moved into an assisted living facility, so we were all gathered together helping to clear out her home of the sixty some odd years of collectables, knick-knacks and family heirlooms she had gathered during her life.  My husband’s grandfather passed away when my husband was in high school, and was a major influence on his life.  It’s because of his grandfather that my husband enjoys gardening and woodworking.   When everyone in the family was encouraged to choose items to keep from the home, my husband made a straight line to the woodshop to gather up some of his grandfather’s tools.  Using the tools that his grandfather had used is an emotional connection for my husband.

This got me thinking about the family keepsakes that I have from my own family.  I have a crystal ring box that was my great-grandmothers; I have antique plates decorating my kitchen that were my grandmother’s.  But the real treasures, those are still held by my own mother.  She has quilts that my great-grandmother loomed the fabric, and pieced together to form a pattern.  They are beautiful, and in an era where things are mass-produced and copied they are a little awe inspiring for me.  They are an inspiration for my own mother, who is passionate about quilting and sewing.

While you’re building your own family tree and sharing family stories why not take photographs of some of your family heirloom pieces, and then write a little about them and their history and share them on your page?  Invite and encourage your other family members to join you and share their own photographs and stories as well!  Perhaps you can even find an old photo of someone in your family using, or holding, the treasured item!
