Many of you have written to us, or left comments on the Facebook application page, asking how to find a lost family member. In some cases it’s someone you lost touch with long ago, or it could be someone you’ve heard interesting stories about from other relatives through the years. Either way the answer is the same. Finding a lost family member can be as easy as building your family tree on Mundia.com.
Start your family tree to find family members
To get started create your Mundia profile, then add your parents, grandparents, any children you might have and your spouse. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the details. Maybe you know your grandmother’s birthday was in April, but you don’t know the exact date or the year. Perhaps you can remember the year in which your grandfather passed away but you don’t remember the month. Don’t worry about it. Just enter the details you remember, even if you’re not sure if they’re completely accurate. You or your invited family members, can always edit this information later.
When I started building my own family tree there were some family members I could only remember by name, and I wasn’t sure of the maiden names for some of the women. I was very pleasantly surprised though when I received hints that helped me match my great-grandmother with information already in the system.
How hinting makes finding family members easy
The way hinting works is that if anyone else on Mundia has entered similar information for one of their family members, you will see a little shaking leaf icon on the matched profile in your tree. When you click the leaf, it will take you to a “hint” page that allows you to compare the information you entered with the information from the other Mundia member’s tree. To confirm the match, just check the boxes to copy their information to your tree. You will also see other information like the names of their parents, siblings, spouse, etc.
The hint page will also tell you which Mundia member entered the information so you can send them a private message and compare notes. This is a great way to connect with family members around the world you may not even know and an excellent means of helping you find long lost family members.
Improve your chances of finding lost family members by sending invites
Don’t forget to invite your relatives to join you on Mundia.com so they can share their own information and additional details they might remember about your family members. Maybe your cousin remembers where your grandparents got married, or where they were born. Every little detail added by family members grows your tree, helps you make new connections and gets you one step closer to finding lost family.
I hope this helps. Have fun and be sure to let us know how you get on!
